Eat the Breakfast That Has Already Been Practiced
- Oatmeal with banana and honey, eggs and toast, or a bagel with PB.
- Keep fat and fiber moderate; bacon digests too slowly on race day.

Aspire Race Morning
A T-minus timeline from wake-up to the gun, so nothing gets decided for the first time on race morning.
Race morning goes better as a rehearsed routine than a decision made under nerves. This checklist works backward from gun time through breakfast, the optional top-off, and the final warm-up window.
A rehearsed T-minus routine turns race morning into the calmest part of the day, not the most stressful.
Do this:
Try this week: Run the whole checklist before one hard workout: breakfast, bottle, small snack, water sips, then go.
Not true: the top-off snack refills the tank. Breakfast did the real work hours ago.
Do these three things this week:
Start with the food category. Tap a package for one recognizable brand example, then swap within the category for access, tolerance, culture, budget, and allergens.
Nothing new. Nothing heroic. Everything rehearsed.

The real meal.
Familiar carbs, low fat, low fiber: bagel with honey, oatmeal with banana, toast and jam. Practiced at least twice before race day.
Use the practiced fluid routine.
Let weather, bathroom access, thirst, and practiced tolerance guide comfortable sips. Do not make finishing the bottle a rule.
Optional top-off.
Only if breakfast was small: banana, applesauce pouch, half a granola bar.
Nerves window.
If solids will not go down, liquid carbs count. Diluted sports drink covers the last stretch.
Trust the work.
Fueling is done. Nothing eaten now runs the race.

A breakfast three to four hours out has time to leave the stomach and top up liver glycogen, so the race starts on fuel with nothing sloshing.
A small carbohydrate top-off an hour out can steady blood sugar for longer races, but it is a few bites, and some athletes' guts do better without it.
Rehearsing the same sequence before hard workouts trains gut tolerance and removes decisions, which is what keeps nerves from turning into a skipped meal.

The next meet is close enough to write and rehearse the full plan.
Coach script
“Race morning is not the time to find a magic food. It is the time to repeat a plan you already trust.”
Write the meal, time, and portion that already worked before training.
Pack one familiar backup for nerves, delays, or a moved start time.
Name the first food or meal available after the race.
Ask the team
What part of your race plan still depends on guessing?
Message for parents
Keep race food familiar, confirm the start and departure times, and let the athlete rehearse the plan before the important meet.

Write the rehearsed breakfast, pack one delay backup, and photograph the meet bag.
Done looks like: The bag photo shows the familiar food, labeled bottle, and backup together.
From one handout to a repeatable team system
