What is RED-S?
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) is a syndrome associated with chronically under-fueling relative to training demands. It affects both male and female athletes and can cause bone stress injuries, hormonal disruption, cardiovascular issues, and mental health decline. Early identification is key.

Use this in practice
- Run through this checklist quarterly or whenever you notice concerning patterns in an athlete.
- This tool is for the COACH only. Never share results with the athlete directly.
- If the meter hits RED, do not wait. Refer within 24-48 hours and document the next step.

Practical examples
Coach-facing warning-sign visuals for skipped team meals, bone-risk patterns, and private referral conversations instead of vague red flags.

Skipped team-meal pattern
A practical image for the athlete who keeps missing or under-eating the same team dinners and recovery windows.

Coach conversation setup
Lead with observations and care, not accusations or body comments.

Bone-risk warning pattern
Use this when the tool needs to show what recurrent bone stress and low-intake support can look like in practice.
