Indoor meets change the race-day meal: lunch often matters most
Dear [Team Name] Families, Indoor meets often happen later in the day than families expect. That changes the race-day plan. The athlete may still need breakfast, but lunch often becomes the main pre-race meal that actually supports the event. The indoor meet structure usually works best when families think in three parts: - eat breakfast so the day does not start empty - use lunch as the main pre-race meal if the race is later in the afternoon or evening - bring a small top-off snack for the final stretch before warming up This is where a lot of indoor fueling goes wrong. Athletes either eat like the race is first thing in the morning or they keep lunch too small because they are nervous about competing later. Then they spend the back half of the day trying to race on too little. The better plan is to keep lunch familiar, balanced, and early enough to settle well. Closer to the race, the athlete can use a smaller, easier carb if needed instead of trying to cram in a full meal too late. Families help most by looking at the actual meet schedule and building the food plan around that clock instead of around habit or guesswork. This week, we are pairing the email with the competition meal planner so the athlete can see what an indoor meet day should actually look like.
