5:10 at home
Small, familiar, no arguing
- At 5 a.m., start with a familiar option the athlete can manage.
- If tested before, a drinkable option can help when solid food feels hard.
On the bus
This is the real breakfast
- Sixty to ninety minutes after departure, once they are actually awake.
- Bagel, peanut butter, banana, a second carton of milk.
The bag
Pack what survives the ride
- Pack bagels, bars, pretzels, fruit, pouches, or unopened shelf-stable milk.
- Sandwiches and cheese travel only with an ice pack.
Context
Overview
A 10:00 a.m. race with a 5:45 a.m. bus is not a race-morning problem. It is a logistics problem wearing a race-morning costume.
Much of the standard advice assumes an athlete wakes at home, eats at a table, and controls the drive to the start. A high school athlete on an away meet may instead rely on choices available at home, on the bus, and at the venue. The plan has to work in those real access points.
This guide is about handling those two places.

What coach says
"Departure time changes our food access, so decide tonight what familiar option you want at home and what you want available on the bus." The coach makes the schedule and storage plan clear. The athlete and family choose foods, amounts, and timing based on appetite, tolerance, culture, medical needs, and the routine already tested in training.
