Coach: say this
- The itinerary is posted. Departure, race windows, return, and where I will post changes. Read it with your family tonight.
- I checked the venue. No coolers past the gate, one refill station by the finish, concessions may not open. Pack for that.
- One adult carries the team backup bag. If your bag is lost or the start moves, you come to that adult, not the snack stand.
- Bring the food you have eaten before a hard workout. I will never check your bag or grade what is in it.
Why it works
A travel day stretches the gap between meals, so liver and muscle glycogen drain before the race unless the athlete eats on the published timeline.
Familiar food is what the gut has practiced; a new concession item under race nerves is a common source of cramps and a mid-race bathroom stop.
Naming one adult for storage, refill, and the backup means warm coolers and late buses get handled by a plan; anything that sat out too long gets discarded, not sniffed.
Don't say
- “There will be food there.” Concessions close, buses run late, and a hungry runner on the line is a plan that failed.
- “Show me what you packed.” The coach checks the schedule and the storage, never an athlete's food.
- “It smells fine, eat it.” Follow the food-safety policy; if the cooler failed, the backup carrier discards it.
Refer whenAn athlete who repeatedly cannot eat on trips, arrives with nothing and refuses the backup, or is dizzy or faint on a hot trip day needs the athletic trainer and a private family conversation, not a stricter packing list. Collapse, confusion, or chest pain is the emergency route now.

For families
Read the itinerary before you pack a single thing
- Ask the coach for the real timeline: departure, race windows, return, and where a delay gets announced. Pack to those hours, not to a normal day.
- Check the venue rules before buying anything: outside food, bag size, allergy limits, and whether a fridge, cooler, or concessions are actually there.
- Send familiar shelf-stable food in an insulated bag: bagels, granola bars, pretzels, applesauce, crackers, fruit, and a full bottle plus a backup for delays.
- Allergy and health details go through the school's process, not a team sheet. The team never asks for plate photos, food logs, or body numbers.
Watch for · One rough trip is logistics. If your runner comes home from most trips having eaten almost nothing, or dreads eating away from home, tell the coach and ask the pediatrician whether a check-in makes sense.
