Midseason warning signs we do not ignore
Dear [Team Name] Families, I want to name a few midseason warning signs directly because this is often when underfueling, bone stress, or broader low energy availability starts to get normalized instead of addressed. Please pay attention if the athlete is showing patterns like: - repeated bone pain or nagging shin, foot, hip, or back pain - fatigue that keeps getting worse instead of steadier - frequent illness or poor recovery - menstrual changes or concern about food becoming more restrictive - body-talk that is starting to sound like the athlete believes smaller automatically means faster These concerns are not about panic. They are about noticing early enough to respond. In runners, energy availability, iron status, training load, and bone health often overlap. Waiting for a major problem usually makes the season harder, not cleaner. Families can help by keeping the conversation focused on health, performance, recovery, and what the athlete actually needs, rather than on body size or appearance. If pain or fatigue patterns are repeating, bring the coach, trainer, or clinician into the loop sooner. This is the season window where a small issue can still be redirected if we do not pretend it is nothing. We are pairing this week with the low-energy and bone-health tools so families have a practical next step instead of only a warning.
