If your athlete is already unusually tired, ask better questions now
Dear [Team Name] Families, Summer training comes with some normal tiredness. What we do not want to ignore is fatigue that seems out of proportion to the work, recovery that keeps lagging, or an athlete who looks flat before the racing season even begins. Low iron status is one possible reason athletes struggle, especially in runners who are growing, training hard, menstruating, or eating too little overall. This is why I want families to pay attention early instead of waiting for the athlete to dig a deeper hole. This week, watch for patterns like: - fatigue that does not match the training load - poor recovery after sessions that should be manageable - unusual drop in motivation or pace for no obvious reason - frequent illness, dizziness, or feeling run down If those patterns are showing up, ask the clinician whether ferritin should be part of the conversation along with the usual bloodwork. This is an early-check message, not a self-diagnosis message. The goal is to catch possible problems while we still have time to act on them calmly. Families also need to remember that fatigue is not always just an iron question. Total food intake, sleep, hydration, illness, and low energy availability matter too. That is why this week is really about paying attention instead of brushing symptoms aside. We are pairing this week with the iron support tool so you can understand the question better before the season gets busier.
