The 30-second answer
Do not make an athlete choose between arriving fueled and eating after practice. Use a substantial school-to-practice snack or early mini-meal, then have an easy recovery meal or snack ready for the ride home or immediately afterward. The exact split depends on lunch, practice length, appetite, and bedtime.
What to do next
- 1
Plan the before-practice food and after-practice food at the same time instead of waiting until the athlete gets home.
- 2
Prepare the after-practice option before leaving for school or work, then refrigerate it or keep it in an insulated cooler with frozen ice packs.
- 3
Choose familiar food that can be eaten quickly without adding another hour of cooking late at night.
A workable two-part dinner
- Before practice: half a sandwich and fruit; a bagel and yogurt; rice or pasta leftovers; cereal with milk; or another familiar carb-forward mini-meal with some protein.
- After practice: chocolate milk and a banana; yogurt and cereal; a sandwich; a smoothie made at home; a reheated dinner portion; or a car snack followed by a smaller meal.
- Never leave milk, yogurt, meat sandwiches, leftovers, or homemade smoothies in a warm car, bus, locker, or backpack all day.
What a coach can say
“Because we finish late, do not arrive at practice expecting dinner to fix the whole day. Eat the planned school-to-practice food and have a recovery option ready for afterward. Your household can decide whether that is dinner, a mini-meal, or a snack followed by something at home.”
What to avoid
- Do not tell athletes it is too late to eat.
- Do not make recovery depend on a drive-through being open.
- Do not use caffeine to push through a chronically underfueled day.
When general guidance stops
Ongoing appetite loss, sleep disruption related to eating, recurrent reflux or stomach pain, persistent fatigue, or inability to meet growth and training needs deserves individual medical and nutrition review.
