Recognizable options
What this can look like at the store
These are familiar examples, not a required shopping list. Use the food category to find an option that fits your athlete, budget, and allergy needs.
Brands are shown only as concrete examples, not endorsements. Ingredients, labels, and availability can change; check the current package for allergens and fit. Image sources and rights notice.

Departure
Travel days need food packed before the bag is zipped
- Bus rides become accidental fasts when athletes assume time later.
- Pack a breakfast backup, snacks, fluids, and one recovery option.
Hotel mornings
Use the hotel breakfast, but do not depend on it alone
- Bring oats, bagels, cereal, or applesauce in case the options are weak.
- Decide breakfast the night before, not in the lobby line.
Away meet flow
Plan the full meet day, not just the drive
- Portable carbs, fluids, and recovery foods matter more away from home.
- Track the gap between arrival, warm-up, race, and the ride back.
Context
Overview
Travel nutrition works when the logistics are decided before athletes are tired and hungry. The coach does not need to prescribe portions. The program needs to make familiar food, safe storage, drink refills, allergy-aware options, and schedule updates easy to find.
This playbook builds that system.
Send one clear travel message
Families need to know:
- departure, expected arrival, and the current competition schedule;
- which meals and snacks the team provides;
- what each athlete should pack;
- whether refrigeration or a cooler is available;
- where drink refills will be available;
- how schedule changes will be communicated;
- the school-approved allergy and medical contact; and
- what money, if any, an athlete may need for a food stop.
